Former Major and Bilk 31 ALO Skip Little is living in Huntsville, Alabama. He survived both Camp Evans and hurricane Ivan.

"I am with Boeing and have been ever since I got out of the AF in April '79. However, I am not in Seattle, although I've been to "Mecca" many times over the years. I joined Boeing in their Houston operations (Military and NASA support), then moved to Omaha as the then Boeing Aerospace Marketing Rep, then to the Boston area doing much the same thing, except supporting different programs, and then to Huntsville AL, first on Space Station and now National Missile Defense.

I have been here quite a while now and am looking forward to bailing out in the not to distant future, but have made no firm decisions."

David L. "Dutch" Helms, Bilk 37, Aug 69 - Aug 70.

After Camp Evans, Dutch went off to the T-37 as an IP at Sheppard AFB (UPT) and then as an IP at Randolph AFB (PIT).  Selected by AFIT for Grad School at Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA (MA - National Security Affairs) and then served as Asst Air Attaché at our Embassy in Bonn Germany.  Returned to CONUS as a T-38 IP at Columbus AFB, then two years at the Pentagon on the Joint Staff.  Transferred to HQ SHAPE in Mons, Belgium, as Special Assistant to the DSACEUR, then back to Bonn again - one year as again Asst. Air Attaché, and then 3 years as Chief, Air Force Section, Office of Defense Cooperation (ODC).  Retired as a Lt Col in 1988 and entered Federal Civil Service at Wright-Patterson as Country Manager for German Foreign Military Sales (FMS) Programs at AFMC's International Logistics Center from February 1989 until transferring again to Germany in February 1991. At that time, Dutch was posted there as an Armaments Cooperation Specialist again at the Office of Defense Cooperation at our Embassy in Bonn. In October 1992, Dutch was promoted to Deputy Chief of the ODC and appointed Armaments Cooperation Manager for the Embassy. He was later retired from this position in early 1994 due to the effects of a medical disability (Larynx Cancer).

Dutch underwent a total laryngectomy (complete loss of voice box) in May of 1994 and spoke via a voice prosthesis.  Dutch  enjoyed computers, web site design, military miniatures, and travel.  He was the Webmaster for several web sites: two charitable organizations: The International Association of Laryngectomees (http://www.larynxlink.com/), the WebWhispers Nu-Voice Club (http://www.webwhispers.org/), and two businesses - The Voicestore (http://www.voicestore.com/) and Alloy Analysis of Texas (http://www.alloyanalysisoftx.com/).  He was married and divorced twice and had one daughter, Kristen, who lives near Dallas.

WEBMASTER UPDATE: November 2006 - It is with deep regret I announce the passing of Lt Col David L. "Dutch" Helms, Bilk 37.  He will be greatly missed.

Former Major Dick Gifford the Evans ALO from '68 to 69 enjoyed his vacation at our lovely Evans resort:

"l looked at the pic's and I swear I couldn't recognize very much!!! Our "hooch" was an actual bunker left from the 3/82nd Airborne days, the 3rd/101st replaced them I believe!!! Our "Hooch" contained 4 bedrooms, or something like that, a "living room," a cooking/eating area. Truly the LAP OF LUXURY!! Your picture of the Officer's Hooch is NOT where we "Lived in said Luxury!" The "tower" however was reminiscent of the shower we had at our hooch!! A Labor of Love built by a couple of the Pilots in the detachment!!"

"The Jeep is familiar, mine was the same type and had a BIG RED SIREN mounted on the left fender, I think!??? When I was there we often times "dined" in the 3/101st Officer's Mess, pretty darn good!!

Enough!!

"THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES."

Later, Dick"

Lt George Hoffman
Great website! I just stumbled upon your site when I typed our old squadron in Google for the first time ever. I was amazed to see a website just for us!

I'm George Hoffman, the lieutenant in the group photo on page four. I'm standing on the far left in a rain suit. I was Bilk 38, I slept in the middle "bedroom" and had pictures of my Japanese wife on the wall. You may remember when I got wiped out on Jim Beam during that drinking game we played when we pointed with our elbows, I can't remember the name of the game. We all got into a gang fight, somebody poured a can of chocolate over my head (I didn't remember that part) and then I barfed while trying to tape my wife. You guys then carried me outside in the monsoon and placed me head down in the ditch that ran outside and left me there to drown in my own secretions. What an experience. The next day I had to pass on my mission for the only time during my tour.

After Nam I went to Wright Patt in a Convair to end my AF career then went to Med School in Philadelphia for four years. I eventually finished training as an Urologist at Baylor Med School in Houston and settled down in Beaumont, Texas. I'm still married to Chiyoko and nearing retirement. I still fly and have an Aerostar.

I haven't seen or heard from anyone in the unit since my tour. It's time we think about a reunion. I hope everybody eventually finds this website so that we can arrange something. I also have a lot of slides and as soon as I get around to having them digitalized I will forward them to you.

Former Sgt and retired Chief Jim Tagg, was a radioman at Evans from Aug 69-Aug 70. He says:

James (Jim) Tagg here. Nice to meet you this way. You are doing an excellent job with this site. Keep up the good work. I will pull out some of my old pictures and hope to recall a story or two. My time there was Aug 69 - Aug 70. Elinor the jeep was named after my wife. We requisitioned her from the Army with a little help then added AF decals. Then the Army serviced it and gave us our fuel. Onyun worked for me there too. It was great seeing a picture of him. We had an A1C Joseph (Joe) Osborne with us at the time. He was from Jackson, Ohio, not far from where I grew up. I always told my wife I had to stop in there and see if I could find him. I did find him in the phone directory. A 93 year old lady from Jackson, Ohio, was in the hospital with my mother-in-law, 95 years of age. I talked to her about Joe and gave her some information on Joe and myself to help locate him. Not long after she was discharged from the hospital I received a card from her saying she met Mrs. Osborne and that Joe has passed away a few months earlier. One should never put things off like that. Joe was a great radio operator. After Camp Evans I went to Tyndall AFB, FL, Albrook AS, Panama, The Pentagon, an ROTC assignment at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach, FL, Yokota AB, Japan, Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, and then retired after 30 years and reaching the rank of chief master sergeant. Will keep in touch and plan to send you some information to post on the site...again...thanks again for everything you have done and are doing. Respectfully, Jim Tagg

Former 1Lt Hal Anderson, Bilk 35, is alive and well and found us while surfing the net. He says:

Mike,

Just stumbled across your website. Nice to make a connection. I'll try to send more later (maybe a picture or two), but wanted you to know I was "alive and well". As to the "unidentified pilot", 3rd from the right, on page 3 of your photos, that's Jim Brew. I was in his wedding shortly after we got back from Nam, but have lost track of him. Last I knew, he lived in New York City.

After getting back from Vietnam, I spent one more assignment as a T-38 flight instructor, then stan/eval check pilot, at Reese Air Force Base in Lubbock, TX. Met and married there, then left the Air Force in 1976. Went into real estate in Central Texas, developing a golf course subdivision, and later had my own real estate company. I sold that in 2000 and have been semi-retired since, although I still dabble in real estate. Live in Belton, just north of Austin, TX. I'm attaching a current picture, although I can't see that I've changed all that much since Evans... :-)

More later, Hal Anderson Bilk 35

Former A1C Glen Olsen was a Crew Chief at Evans from 70-71. He says:

Hello Mike.... What a shock I received upon Googling 20th TASS and seeing a site for Camp Evans. And then an even bigger shock of seeing pictures of myself walking the flight line at good old Evans.

My name is Glen Olsen. I was at Camp Evans as an O2 Crew Chief  70-71. Man do I ever remember my time at Evans; riding around in a jeep to all the different army chow halls trying to see who had the best( edible ) food that day, trying to light our super dooper drop tank water heater in the evening to take a warm shower( ya got points if you didn't blow the stack pipe off).  Oh all the warm fuzzies.

I remember several of the fellas from Evans that are pictured, Rocket man, Hal Anderson the pilot from Texas. I remember the one pilot that you show as unidentified, he was from the east coast somewhere and used to hang out with Hal a lot. I can't recall his name right now but it will come to me sooner or later. I got to Evans right about the time Gary Minor was deros-ing. I flew up to Evans from Danang in an O2, looking at the sights along the way and wondering what the hell I had gotten myself into. I have some recollection of you but I think that you left Evans also shortly after I got there.

Well in any event, I currently work as an Electronics Technician for the US postal Service here in Chicago. It started out as a temporary position but as I've been here three years already so maybe not .Unfortunately all my pictures from  'Nam where lost in a fire  but I could send you a current picture and maybe you have another of me from that time. I would greatly appreciate it if you can email me any other pictures you have from Evans or even Danang.

Hopefully this email will find you in good health and that you and your family are doing well. Here are all my particulars and please contact me any time that you have the time.
